Should I use digital printing or direct printing?

Two of the most common printing methods for signage are digital printing and direct printing. In this article, we compare these two printing techniques to help you make an informed decision for your new signs.

For the best uses and the pros and cons of each method, see our advice below.

Direct printing

Direct printing involves applying ink directly onto the surface of acrylic, metal, or wood.

More affordable

Direct printing is more affordable than digital printing, making it a popular option for temporary or indoor signage. This is because the printer applies the ink directly to the sign, rather than printing onto a vinyl that then needs to be applied to the substrate. This saves substantial labour, which also helps with the cost.

Indoor use only

Direct printing is prone to fading over time and is not suitable for long-term outdoor use. When exposed to sunlight or harsh weather conditions, the direct print method fades quickly.

Limited designs and colours

Direct printing tends to lack vibrancy and detail because the ink is applied directly to the sign. While this is sufficient for simple signage, the muted colours often lack depth and brightness. If you need high-impact visuals, digital printing is highly recommended instead.

Digital printing

Digital printing involves printing graphics onto vinyl or a specialised film. The vinyl sign graphic is then applied to the structural signage material.

Vibrant graphics

Digital printing supports a vivid colour range, producing high contrast and sharp visuals. The additional layer of vinyl or film creates a rich depth in the graphics, making them stand out with crisp details and clarity.

At Corporate Sign Industries, our 8-colour Roland Digital Printer and Mimaki UV printer deliver deep vibrant colours which give the appearance of a painted finish with no streaking or faded patches. In short, it looks like multiple paint coats but is much more efficient to apply.

Durable and suitable for outdoor use

Digital printing is more resilient to sunlight and weathering, meaning it is suitable for most environments. Protective laminates can be applied to your digital prints, providing superior durability for outdoor use.

Lower lifetime costs

Though digital printed signs may require a higher upfront investment than direct printing, they will last much longer. These signs will require very little maintenance, retaining their crisp graphics and colours for many years.

Digital printing vs direct printing

The right printing technique for you will depend on the sign you need. If you want a basic indoor sign that will be protected from UV light, a direct printed sign will be more cost-effective. However, if your sign will be outdoors or you need high-impact visuals, a digitally printed sign will be a wise investment.

While digital printing comes at a higher upfront cost, it provides a much better return on investment in the long term. We also recommend opting for digital printing if you are updating a full suite of signage as this will guarantee consistency across the range.
